Can Chiropractic Care Do More Than Relieve Pain? What New Research Suggests

A December 2025 PLOS One trial looked at what chiropractic care may be doing inside the body — from stress hormones to immune activity to the brain's own repair systems.

If you have ever wondered whether chiropractic care does anything beyond loosening a stiff back, you are not alone. Most people think of an adjustment purely in terms of pain relief. But a new study published in the journal PLOS One in December 2025 looked at something different: what chiropractic care may be doing inside the body at a biological level, from stress hormones to immune activity to the brain's own repair systems.

At Trail Chiropractic, our approach is built around the nervous system first. We use CLA neurological scanning to look at how the spine and nervous system are functioning together, not just where pain shows up. So when research like this comes out, we like to break it down for our Bentonville and Northwest Arkansas community in plain language.

What the Study Actually Looked At

Researchers followed 106 adults with mild, subclinical spinal discomfort (meaning they had not yet sought treatment) over a 16 week period. Half received real chiropractic adjustments for 12 weeks. The other half received a sham version, where the chiropractor went through the same motions without an actual adjustment. Neither group was told which one they were getting, and the study was carefully designed so both groups believed they may have received real care.

Along the way, the researchers measured blood, saliva, and hair samples for a range of biological markers, things like brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF, a protein tied to brain and nerve repair), cortisol (a key stress hormone), and several markers of immune and inflammatory activity.

What They Found

A few results stood out after 12 weeks of care:

BDNF increased in the chiropractic group. BDNF plays an important role in supporting the nervous system's ability to adapt and repair itself, sometimes called neuroplasticity. Many patients report feeling sharper or more resilient after consistent care, and this may offer a possible biological piece of that puzzle.

Inflammatory markers shifted in a favorable direction. TNF alpha, a marker tied to ongoing inflammation, was lower in the chiropractic group at both the 12 and 16 week marks. Meanwhile, the group that did not receive real adjustments saw several inflammatory markers trend upward over the same period.

Cortisol patterns changed over time. Saliva cortisol rose in the chiropractic group during the 12 weeks of care, which the researchers suggest may reflect the body's normal short term response to the mechanical work of an adjustment, similar to how muscles respond to exercise. By the 16 week follow up, however, overall blood cortisol had dropped below where it started, suggesting the body may have settled into a calmer baseline once the active care phase ended.

Why This Matters for How We Think About Care

The researchers were careful to note that this is early stage research. The sample size was modest, some of the confidence intervals were wide, and the study authors themselves called for larger, longer trials before drawing firm conclusions. We want to be equally careful here: this study does not prove chiropractic care cures any specific condition, and no reputable source should ever claim that.

What it does offer is a genuinely interesting piece of evidence that chiropractic care may influence the body's stress response, immune activity, and nervous system function, not just the joints and muscles that patients can feel and describe. That lines up with how we think about care here at Trail Chiropractic. What This Means If You're Considering Care
